Interlaken Ost, or East, is one of two train stations in the Swiss resort town of Interlaken. Sitting at the junction of three different major railway lines, this station forms an important part of the Swiss public transit network and also provides links to other countries, notably Germany.
Interlaken was a very popular resort town back in the 19th century just as it is today, and this station was first opened in 1874, two years after its sister station of Interlaken West. Originally, the station was the end of the line and was intended to allow passengers to board steamships on the lakes for further travel. However, over the years, the rail network expanded, eventually reaching Bern and making this station more important. Interestingly, the station is still the terminus of every line that reaches it because the railway lines that reach here are incompatible due to differing electrical systems and gauge sizes. That means if you take a train here, you'll either have to switch at the station or end your journey here. Still, there are worse places to be.
Exploring Interlaken is much easier when you don't carry more than you need to. There are luggage lockers at Interlaken Ost, though these are the coin-operated style of train station lockers, which means you'll need Swiss coins to operate them. A better option might be to store luggage at a left luggage facility with a private company.
Bounce provides luggage storage facilities in Interlaken and throughout the world. By partnering with businesses like local shops, hotels, and restaurants, we provide left luggage facilities where you can store luggage for anything from a few hours to an entire day or more. Leave the bags and suitcases behind and enjoy Interlaken without being weighed down. Our left luggage service makes it easy to find luggage storage wherever you are.
Interlaken Ost Station sits right on the river Aare, which connects to this gorgeous Alpine lake. Just outside the station itself, you'll find a quay where you can hop on a ship to explore the lake the way travelers have done for well over 100 years. Incredible views of the lake from the deck of the ship are guaranteed to be a highlight of your trip to the city, but of course, a ship is no place for heavy bags. Remember to leave yours behind at luggage storage facilities at the train station or with local shops.
Just on the side of the river from Interlaken Ost, this small wildlife park is the perfect place to encounter the charismatic animals of the mountains. Home to Ibex, marmots, and other local wildlife, this is a great place to spend an hour or so after leaving your bags behind at a convenient left luggage office.
This former monastery and castle is just a short walk from the station and contains two ancient churches that make it a great place to explore. With the beautiful mountains as a backdrop, this historical place will give you an insight into centuries past in the Swiss town. Note that large bags are not allowed inside, and the luggage storage facilities and luggage lockers here quickly fill up, so it's a good idea to leave your bags and suitcases in our left luggage facilities. Also, make sure you check the opening hours of this attraction, as they can vary with the seasons.
The station also provides a hub for the city's bus network. The long-distance bus to Thun stops here, along with city bus routes 21, 60, 102, 103, and others.
Just outside the train station, Interlaken Ost Ferry Terminal is a major hub for routes 59, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, and 79. These ferries can take you across the lake to neighboring towns and provide a beautiful as well as efficient way to get around.
Interlaken is a great place to spend some time, whether it's your final destination or a stop along the way. Whether you arrive in the city by Interlaken Ost, Interlaken West, by car, or by boat, you'll find plenty to keep you busy here. And with excellent transportation connections to places like Bern, Lucerne Train Station, and Geneva Train Station, Interlaken is as easy to reach as it is to enjoy. Leave the bags behind at a convenient left luggage facility and immerse yourself in everything Interlaken offers.
