Marvelous Greece calls you to challenge your body and spirit once again at the Athens Marathon 2024! Grab the opportunity to witness runners triumph on a historic route once traveled by ancient heroes.
As legend has it, back in 490 B.C., an Athenian messenger named Pheidippides ran 42 kilometers from the city of Marathon to Athens to deliver news of a monumental victory over the Persians. This inspiring tale led to the inclusion of the marathon event in the first modern Olympics, held in 1896 in Athens. For these Olympic games, the Panathenaic Stadium—the only stadium made entirely of marble—was restored, hosting athletes from around the world.
The Athens Marathon, first introduced in 1896, has been an annual race since 1972. Runners gather in the ancient city of Marathon to conquer the road to Athens, finishing right at the ancient Stadium. This road race is usually held on the second Sunday in November, so pack your bags and plan your 2024 trip to Greece for November 10!
The Athens Marathon is not only a testament to the origins of the marathon race but also a commemoration of the significant historical event that inspired it. It’s also called the ‘Authentic Marathon,’ since its route faithfully copies the very first route that Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger, ran to bring news of victory.
The Marathon Road race or full marathon has a time limit of 8 hours and is 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles) long. Besides the full marathon, there is also a 10km race, a 5km race, and a Children's race.
At 9 am, all runners will gather at the starting line while the spectators cheer for them. The runners will pass around the Marathon tomb, run near the base of Mount Penteli, and end their journey on the streets of the Greek capital. There will be many uphill areas, which can slow the runners a bit. However, after about 32 km, the athletes may feel a natural boost as the route shifts downhill and aligns with the winds, easing their run into the avenues of the city center.
Expect mild weather with temperatures around 18°C (64.4°F) during the day. The forecast predicts around ten wet days in November, so, just in case, be prepared for some rain. Dress in cozy clothes and bring a jacket for the cooler mornings. Whether you're running or cheering, you'll need comfortable sneakers or shoes.
The registrations for all races on November 10 are closed. Only the 5km Universities Night Run on November 9 is available with entry fees of €20.00. You can register here.
You can watch the marathon for free! Official race results will be available shortly after the race, either during the same day or within 24 hours.
The race organizers will take all the measurements to provide a pleasant environment for everyone at the marathon. These are the things you can expect:
