Moomba Festival 2025

Come to Melbourne for a festive celebration of life and joy!

The Moomba Festival has been celebrated since 1955. It was created to boost Melbourne’s community spirit after World War II and to align with the Labour Day long weekend. The inaugural festival featured a parade, carnival rides, and river activities on the Yarra, setting the tone for years to come.

If you're curious about how this festival got its name, here's an interesting story! William Onus, an Aboriginal activist and artist, suggested the name "Moomba," claiming it means "let's get together and have fun." However, linguists later noted that "moom" in some Aboriginal languages means "buttocks," and "ba" translates to "up" or "behind." This amusing misunderstanding led to the conclusion that "Moomba" could be interpreted as "up your bum!"

An important festival event is the crowning of the Moomba Monarchs - a cherished tradition of the Moomba Festival. This occasion celebrates prominent Australians for their community, arts, or cultural contributions. Each year, a King and Queen are crowned as ambassadors for the festival.

Experience magic and excitement from March 6 to 10.

What to Expect When Attending Moomba Festival 2025

The highlights of the festival are the Moomba Parade and the Moomba Carnival. But there are other parts of it which you'll also be able to enjoy, like live music and nightly fireworks.

The Moomba Carnival will open on March 6. This staple attraction at Alexandra Gardens offers joyful carnival rides, games, and activities for both young and old.

The Moomba Parade will occur on March 10. It's a beautiful, colorful procession featuring floats, dance troupes, community groups, and traditional elements celebrating Melbourne’s diversity. Interestingly, the floats you'll see are all designed by children! This parade takes place along St Kilda Road and ends near Alexandra Gardens.

Two other important events are the Birdman Rally and the Moomba Masters Championship, both held on the Yarra River. The Birdman Rally is a quirky Moomba tradition where participants attempt to "fly" off a platform into the Yarra River using homemade contraptions, often resulting in hilarious splashes. The Moomba Masters Championship, a world-class water sports competition, features elite athletes in waterskiing and wakeboarding.

For the late summer in Melbourne, expect warm daytime temperatures averaging 22–26 C (72–79 F). The evenings will be slightly cooler, around 14–18 C (57–64 F). Dress accordingly, have fun, and don't forget an umbrella for occasional rain showers.

Visitors can enjoy all the events for free.
