Spend wonderful days at Semana Santa in a celebration deeply rooted in tradition!
Semana Santa, or Holy Week in Seville, is a centuries-old celebration with a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The roots of this event trace back to the late 14th century, with a resurgence in the 16th century when the Catholic Church began promoting visual representations of the Passion of Christ to teach and inspire the faithful.
In 1604, Cardinal Fernando Niño de Guevara formalized the structure of the processions, organizing them by religious brotherhoods (hermandades). These groups are still active today, each responsible for its procession and floats. The event flourished during the Baroque period, as Seville’s wealth created more elaborate religious imagery, including intricately designed statues known as pasos.
Semana Santa features over 100 processions, lasting up to 12 hours each and spanning nearly 70,000 participants, including penitents, musicians, and float-bearers!
It's celebrated the week leading to Easter, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, so the dates change each year.
In 2025, let's admire this peaceful celebration on the streets of Seville from April 13 to 20!
You will be greeted by an intense and pleasant atmosphere. The whole celebration is art itself! You can join the crowd on the street or watch the processions from the balconies.
People will spend these days and nights moving from one procession to another! During the processions, you'll hear saetas, emotional, spontaneous songs, sung a capella as a tribute to the Virgin or Christ figures. The saeta is a traditional Spanish flamenco verse that adds a powerful, personal touch.
Don't miss out on La Madrugá, the most essential part of the Holy Week, happening on the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. That night, you'll see famous processions such as Jesus of the Great Power, La Macarena, Esperanza of Triana, or the Christ of the Gypsies.
Each procession features detailed floats, typically two per brotherhood: one depicting scenes from Christ’s Passion and another of the Virgin Mary. Some floats are centuries old and intricately detailed with gold, silver, and flowers!
Expect mild spring weather, with average temperatures ranging from lows around 11°C (52°F) to highs near 22°C (72°F). The sun will shine but don't forget an umbrella, just in case! The dress code is simple and elegant, to show respect for the occasion!
You can attend this celebration for free.

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a significant religious observance in Spain, commemorating the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In 2025, Semana Santa will take place from April 13 to April 20, encompassing the week leading up to Easter Sunday.
The dates of Semana Santa vary each year, as they are determined by the ecclesiastical approximation of the March equinox. Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox, causing Semana Santa to shift between late March and April annually.
Following Semana Santa, many Spanish cities, particularly in Andalusia, celebrate the Feria de Abril (April Fair). This vibrant festival typically begins two weeks after Semana Santa and features flamenco dancing, traditional music, bullfighting, and various cultural events, offering a lively contrast to the solemnity of Holy Week.
