About Copenhagen Airport

Copenhagen Airport, also known as Kastrup, lies to the southeast of the Danish capital. It's not only the biggest airport in the country, but the biggest of any Nordic country. Its 30 million annual passengers make it the 3rd busiest airport in northern Europe.

As large airports tend to be, Copenhagen is a little way outside the city it serves. However, it is well-connected to the city by both train and Metro services that run 24 hours a day and can reach Copenhagen in around 15 minutes. This means reaching the city from the airport, or vice versa, is a breeze.

Copenhagen is one of the oldest airports you're likely to visit, first opened in 1925. Back then, the runways were grass, which was kept short by a flock of resident sheep. However, by the end of the Second World War, Copenhagen was the most modern airport in Europe.

Because it gets so much traffic, Copenhagen airport seems to be continually expanding. This means there's plenty to keep you occupied while you wait for a flight. Drop your bags at a nearby Bounce luggage storage location so that you can enjoy your time at Copenhagen airport to the fullest.

Things to do near Copenhagen Airport

Generally, we see airports as a means to an end. No one travels to see the airport itself. That doesn't mean there's nothing to do at or near Copenhagen airport. Look around, and you're sure to find things to occupy yourself. You can enjoy a meal, relax in a lounge, get a massage, or even spend the night in a hotel. And because it's so easy to reach the city from the airport, everything Copenhagen has to offer is close by.

  • If you're feeling hungry, Copenhagen Airport won't let you down. As well as the usual places to grab a quick snack while you wait for your flight, Copenhagen airport is also home to some more interesting places to eat. Check out LeLe for an eclectic menu of high-quality food that will make you forget you're at an airport at all.
  • Soothe away the stresses of travel at Ni'Mat massage and spa. Located in the Clarion Hotel at the airport, this well-appointed retreat offers rejuvenating massage, a Jacuzzi,  a steam room, and a saltwater pool.
  • The National Aquarium of Denmark, also known as Den Bla Planet, is right beside Copenhagen airport. If you have a few hours to kill, you can spend it meeting some of the residents of the waters that surround Denmark. Turtles, sharks, otters, and octopuses are some of the fascinating animals you'll get to see.
  • Stretch your legs at Amager Strandpark. Just to the north of the airport, this beach offers expansive views over the sea. On a clear day, you may see as far as Sweden, which lies just across a stretch of open water. Here, you can also participate in watersports or swim in the artificial lagoon.
  • Escape the hustle and bustle on Saltholm island. Accessible only by private boat, this low-lying island just off the Danish coast is home to more cows than humans. There's also a bird sanctuary on the island, and if it wasn't for the constant sight of planes landing at Copenhagen airport, you might feel like you are hundreds of miles away from the city.

Transit options to Copenhagen Airport

  • Copenhagen Airport's Terminal 3 connects to the city's Metro system. It takes around 15 minutes to reach Norreport in the city center.
  • Terminal 3 is also home to a train station, and regularly scheduled trains can bring you to Copenhagen Central in the heart of the city in around 15 minutes.
  • Bus 5A will also take you to Copenhagen Central. While it’s cheaper than the train, it’s also slower, taking around 30 to 35 minutes depending on traffic.

Luggage storage at Copenhagen Airport

It's never a good idea to carry more luggage than you need to. And if you have a long wait for a flight, you may want to spend the time visiting some of the attractions in or near Copenhagen airport. Since the airport sits on the edge of the city close to the sea, the distances from one place to another can be quite long.
