This fascinating and beautiful Catholic church is the most important landmark in Gapan and a cornerstone of the town’s colonial architectural heritage. Known officially as the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of La Virgen Divina Pastor, it’s the seat of the Three Kings Parish that’s wifely influential in Gapan City and neighboring towns. All of these cobbled streets are named for their European counterparts, and the distinctive appearance and atmosphere make it a fun place to stroll through. The ornate and (relatively) well-preserved architecture is beautiful and offers insight into what it was like for Spanish colonials in far-off places like Gapan City. 

There aren’t any shopping centers or malls in Gapan City, but you can head to the center of town near the main church, as sort of a one-stop shop. The Plaza is a great place to head to get a sense of Gapan City, and you'll find a few shops and vendors selling souvenirs and handcrafted items great for gifts. 

If you want some fresh fruit to take for a snack while sightseeing, head to this open-air market in the center of town. There are also street food vendors selling the best Filipino bites like fried plantains or deep-fried fish balls.

The favorite is chicharong bulaklak, which is literally deep-fried fat (now that's living the good life). Their steamy kare kare soup is as rich and filling as you’ll find anywhere. Everything on the menu is extremely affordable and extremely delicious. Plus, the people-watching is superb. Even better, whatever you order to eat will cost practically nothing.

Foodies flock to out-of-the-way towns like Gapan for their regional dishes and unadulterated dining experiences, as the bare minimum level of globalization has hit towns like Gapan in the island interiors. If you want some Filipino deep-cuts like adobo, sinampalukan, kaldereta kambing, nilaga, and bulalong baka, head to this cozy spot right in town for authentic but (fairly) approachable folk dishes. 

While you can certainly get authentic Filipino food like adobo meats and rice, Western travelers will find some diner classics a welcome (and wholly unexpected) sight. Malty milkshakes, burgers, and American breakfast food in the middle of the Philippines? It might be worth a try just to see if these dishes hold up in every corner of the globe.
