About the station

You can't really have the comprehensive Sweden travel experience by simply going to Stockholm. Sure, Sweden’s largest city is more than a worthy travel destination. But for a fuller understanding of Scandinavia's largest country, you can dig a little deeper by visiting the smaller but more reflective, Gothenburg. Nestled on the west coast between scenic fjords, Gothenburg actually more closely resembles cities like Amsterdam. With a network of canals and eclectic architecture with wide-ranging influences, this former port city brings a different look to the otherwise ultra-modern Scandinavian aesthetic.

More often than not, international travelers will arrive in Gothenburg via train from Stockholm or other Scandinavian cities like Oslo and Copenhagen. Gothenburg Central Station is the city's largest transportation hub and provides immediate access to plenty of the cities, best attractions, and landmarks. There are both long-distance train routes and local buses and trams running through the train station’s Nils Ericson Terminal. The station itself is an architectural gem with refined neoclassical features, making it a convenient and enjoyable travel experience.

Are there luggage lockers at Gothenburg Central Station?

Swedish train stations usually operate lockers, but the facilities at Gothenburg Central Station aren't as extensive as you’d think, so you’ll need to find a place to store the bags elsewhere. Train station lockers aren't always the best option in any case. The main downside is that you might not be able to fit your larger items and heavy luggage. Luckily, you should be able to find reliable luggage storage nearby through a dedicated service or at your hotel.

Can I store luggage at Gothenburg Airport?

Göteborg Landvetter Airport does have luggage storage offerings, but they are highly minimal and have been out of service at different points since the COVID-19 pandemic. So it’s not a solution you’ll want to rely on. One of the downsides to storing your luggage at the airport is that you won't have immediate access to your belongings. Luckily, several luggage storage options in Gothenburg city center should be more useful.

Where can I leave my bags in Gothenburg?

Things to do near Gothenburg Central Station

Trädgårdsföreningen

While it's situated right in the heart of Gothenburg across from the Central Station, the expansive Trädgårdsföreningen offers locals and travelers a leafy oasis with dense woodlands, spacious lawns, and wonderfully manicured gardens. This wonderful park and botanic garden dates back to the 19th century, and boasts plenty of its original features.

Most of the plant life is naturally occurring, but there are greenhouses featuring a wide array of exotic plants imported from every corner of the globe. If you're visiting Gothenburg during the winter, you'll want to hang out in the Palmhuset greenhouse to enjoy the blast of humid air for a few extra minutes.

Stadsmuseum

If you want to learn about Gothenburg’s Viking history, there’s no better place than the Gothenburg City Museum (Stadsmuseum) right in the city center. Housed in a former industrial building once occupied by the Dutch East India Company (Gothenburg was one of Europe’s major ports), the museum details how the city started as a humble fishing village to become a haven for Viking sailors and explorers before becoming one of Sweden’s industrial powerhouses.

You can take a guided tour in English to go into full detail about history or simply walk around and admire the full Viking ship on display. There’s also a children’s museum with interactive displays and exhibits for the little ones.

Kronhuset

Being an old trading port, historic Gothenburg features a more eclectic array of architecture than other Swedish cities, and the city’s oldest (non-religious) building features Dutch aesthetics. This arsenal was built in the 17th century by King Karl X for the country’s parliament. Now it’s been turned into a community center and museum showcasing traditional Swedish crafts. You’ll find workshops that sell upscale textiles, ceramics, pottery, and leather goods along with a café and events space. It’s steps from Gothenburg Central Station and is an easy place to admire from street level or head inside to check out the offerings.

Airport travel from Gothenburg Central Station

Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is situated well outside the city center, but it's still accessible from Gothenburg Central Station through the Flygbussarna airport buses. These buses leave a few times an hour from the airport arrivals terminal and include a stop at Gothenburg Central Station. The ride takes between 20 and 30 minutes and you can purchase a ticket online or add the ticket kiosk.

You can also hail a taxi and take a ride to central Gothenburg for about $40. Depending on traffic, the ride should take 20-30 minutes. For the price, this might not be worth it unless you're traveling with heavy bags or small children with you. Whether or not renting a car makes sense depends entirely on what you're trying to do during your trip. If you're looking to explore the countryside, hit the fjords, or go hiking, it might make sense. If you're sticking to the city center, don't bother.

Luckily, the amusement park is situated just outside the city center and can be reached on foot from the train station. It's basically a 20-minute walk from Gothenburg Central Station down Norra Hamngatan Street onto Kungsportsavenyen. You absolutely cannot miss the park!
