Canal Street is a major New Orleans thoroughfare that forms the upriver boundary of the French Quarter, the oldest neighborhood in the city. Historically, the street served as a division between the colonial-era city and the more modern American Sector (now known as the New Orleans Central Business District). This was because, during the early 18th century, the Creoles lived exclusively in the Vieux Carre (known today as the French Quarter). When the Louisiana Purchase took place, groups of other Americans started coming into New Orleans and settled in the upriver area. Due to some animosity, a plan to build a canal to separate the two cultures was drawn up, although it was eventually abandoned. Instead, a road was built in place and was eventually named “Canal Street.” The street’s median was referred to as the “neutral ground,” a concept that is still being practiced to this day.
Today, Canal Street is one of the most well-known spots in the city of New Orleans. While it is less popular than other streets like Bourbon or Frenchmen, Canal Street still has plenty to offer. The area is lined with shopping districts, hotels, restaurants, and more. A visit to New Orleans wouldn’t be complete without seeing the best of Canal Street and learning about its rich culture and history.
Fun fact: With a width of 170 feet, Canal Street is believed to be the widest street in the United States.
