Located in the heart of New Orleans, Louisiana is City Park, a 1300-acre public space and urban park. The park, which is about 50% bigger than New York City’s famous Central Park, is one of the most popular and frequented public parks in the United States. Founded in 1854, the site where the park is located was originally where the Allard Plantation stood. Owned by brothers Robert and Louis Allard, the property was seized by businessman John McDonogh after the brothers were unable to pay the mortgage. Before his death, McDonogh left the land equally to both his home city of Baltimore and his current home of New Orleans under the condition that it will be used for recreational purposes. However, Baltimore gave up its half of the land to New Orleans as a form of tax payment; this was when the construction of City Park began.
At present, City Park is one of New Orleans’ top destinations and one of the most popular parks in the country. While it may seem like your typical green space, City Park is actually unique in different ways. For one, it is essentially self-sustaining, with most of the annual budget being generated from donations and user fees. Furthermore, the park is home to several attractions, establishments and facilities where visitors can engage in weeks’ worth of activities.
Fun fact: City Park is home to the biggest collection of mature live oak trees in the world, including a grand oak that is over 800 years old.
Since 1854, City Park has served as the New Orleans’ biggest outdoor attraction. After all these years, there is a reason why the park remains as one of the most beloved attractions in New Orleans by both locals and tourists. The New Orleans Museum of Art, also commonly referred to as NOMA, is the oldest fine arts museum in the city and one of the fixtures in City Park. The facility was opened in 1911 as the Delgado Museum of Art and contained only nine pieces of artwork. It was initially named after sugar broker Isaac Delgado, who financially backed the construction of the museum. However, a few weeks after the museum was completed, Delgado passed away and left a massive art collection previously owned by his great aunt.
Today, NOMA is one of the country’s biggest and most valuable museums, housing a permanent collection with over 40,000 pieces that highlight American and international art, as well as other works such as photography and glass art. Since 2003, NOMA has also served as the home of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture garden. In this 5-acre space, you will find amazing sculptures by artists such as Henry Moore, Do Ho Suh, Auguste Rodin and more. Oversized bags or luggage are not allowed inside the museum.
