Museums

Rochester is a city that appreciates its outstanding citizens and as you find your way around, you'll notice that more than a few of them have been honored with their own museums. There's also a good selection of history museums, an automobile museum, museums dedicated to transport and canals, and even one which only exhibits vintage toys. If the museums in Rochester don't keep your brain occupied then nothing will.  

• The Strong National Museum of Play: At a glance, the Strong National Museum of Play seems to be dedicated to a very uncultural activity, but that's not so. As well as collections of historical artifacts related to play through the ages, the Strong has galleries full of interactive displays that let you explore things like comic book heroes, evil versus good, the sciences, and dressing up.
• The National Susan B. Anthony House and Museum: If you don't know who Susan B. Anthony was then this is one museum in Rochester you really need to visit. The legendary lady was the president of the National American Suffrage Association in the 19th century and the museum is housed in the building where she diligently worked to get women equal rights and the vote, slavery abolished, and encourage people to follow the temperance movement. On the first two, she worked major miracles, but the third was not quite so successful.
• Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum: The Erie Canal played an important role in the development of Rochester. Drop in at the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum and you'll discover how and why this waterway made such a difference to the city. Housed in a refurbished trolley station, this museum has collections of artifacts related to the canal, canal boats and boaters, local history, transport, and communication. The museum is only open during the canal boat season which runs from June through to September.

Shopping

The one thing you won't want to do when you go shopping in Rochester is to go with no money. This store stocks works by many different crafters all under one roof and all made by American or Canadian artisans. They have literally thousands of items on display that are perfect for any occasion and so good you're going to regret having to give away anything you buy.
• The Marketplace Mall: When you see the name Marketplace Mall, don't think this is a produce market; it's not. The Marketplace Mall is a center full of outlet stores with big names at bargain prices. Why pay more when you don't have to? You can get everything here from a new spa bath to a bedside lamp to a new dress for the mother of the bride without having to splash out on the normal full retail price.
• Village Gate Square: This is not a real shopping village, rather a huge warehouse that's been converted to represent a village square lined with shops. It's not got a massive selection of shops, but enough to keep you occupied for a couple of hours if the weather is bad. Clothes, shoes, and homeware are the main items on offer here.

Dining

There are several strong influences you'll find very apparent when you go out to eat in Rochester. The first restaurant door you're likely to come across will more than likely be serving American comfort food as that's a popular eat in this city. You'll also find a good few Mediterranean eateries, either Italian, Greek, French or Spanish, but if you want spice, that's a lot harder to find.  

• Rella: When it comes to laid-back dining, Rella takes first prize. Rella's is a casual Italian restaurant and wine bar on Rochester's Munroe Avenue that serves up a varied menu that includes dishes such as clam chowder, oysters, and Italian risotto. They also offer a tasting menu consisting of twelve individual small dishes, as well as vegan and gluten-free options, which are all paired with Italian wines.
• Master Falafel: If the name doesn't give the game away about what's on this restaurant's menu, you either don't eat out enough or don't follow a vegetarian diet. Masta Falafel is a Syrian restaurant on Monroe Avenue in Rochester which is the perfect dining out spot for vegetarians or those on a gluten-free diet. They make a wide range of falafel seasoned with great ingredients like sesame and soumac or stuffed with cheese. Falafel isn't the only thing on the menu either as they make super vegan stuffed vine leaves and a tabbouleh made from quinoa, plus a variety of hummus and baba ghanouj.
• Lento: While this restaurant may have a name that means slow in Spanish, it doesn't serve Spanish food or have slow service. Lento is a restaurant with a speakeasy vibe that serves all-American fare, albeit with a few modern twists. At Lento you'll get swordfish poached in olive oil, oven chicken roasted under a brick, wolfish from Iceland pan-seared and topped with clam stew and shrimp, or braised beef cheek on a bed of horseradish. Yes, you guessed right. Lento is fine dining with a capital D.
