About Savannah Historic District
Savannah itself is a historic city, but to get a true sense of the old South, you just need to stroll through the Savannah Historic District. This district is the original city that was laid out b General James E. Oglethorpe in 1733. The city is still laid out in much the same way as the historic district into wards or squares instead of neighborhoods. Most of the original squares are still standing. They are surrounded by amazing old buildings and mansions dating back to the 1700s and 1800s, including the Owens-Thomas House, Spencer Woodbridge House, and Greene House. The Savannah Historic District also includes several notable African American buildings and houses, including the King-Tisdell Cottage and Beach Institute.
Visitors to the historic district will stroll along cobblestone streets and feel the breeze through giant oak trees lining parks and sidewalks. Eat your way through some of the tastiest restaurants Savannah has to offer and breathe in the culture that is as deeply rooted as the large oak trees in the parks.
