The Key Arena is a multi-purpose stadium located in Seattle, the largest city in the U.S. state of Washington. Situated in the northern side of downtown Seattle, the arena was initially opened at the Seattle Center with the purpose of providing a venue for the 1962 World’s Fair. The city of Seattle then purchased the venue and transformed it into a multi-purpose arena, particularly for entertainment events such as concerts and sporting games. The stadium got its name from KeyCorp, which bought the naming rights in 1995. When the deal ended in 2010, the city of Seattle decided to keep the stadium’s name until 2018, when the Key Arena announced its closure.
The Key Arena is most renowned for serving as the home court of the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Seattle Supersonics. When the team was founded in 1967, they played their first game at the then-named Seattle Center Coliseum. After moving homes from 1978 to 1985 at the Kingdome, the team returned to Key Arena. They have since stayed there until the Sonics’ relocation to Oklahoma City in 2008. Other teams that have called the Key Arena their home stadium include the Seattle Storm from the Women’s National Basketball Association, the Seattle University Redhawks, and the Rat City Roller Derby.
Fun fact: In June 2020, Amazon announced that it has bought the naming rights to the arena, which will be renamed as Climate Pledge Arena to shine a light to the effects of climate change. They also announced that the arena will be powered exclusively by renewable energy sources. The stadium is presently undergoing a major renovation that costs approximately $900 million.
The Key Arena (Climate Pledge Arena) is one of Seattle’s most frequented attractions because of the array of events that it hosts. In fact, the venue has welcomed over 17 million guests since 1995, solidifying its status as a symbol of the city. However, the energetic atmosphere of the arena goes beyond its walls; there are several attractions close by that offer the same excitement and fun experiences for all types of travelers.
