About Town Hall

Sydney Town Hall is found in the capital of New South Wales, with the chambers of the Lord Mayor of Sydney and other council offices located here. Visitors can sign up for a guided tour of the Town Hall during regular business hours. State business and city meetings are conducted at this heritage-listed building. Many times, citizens and even visitors are welcome to sit in and listen as the council is in session.

The building itself is over 140 years old and, as mentioned, is listed as a National Heritage Site. The architecture of the building is often described as a bride cake and is mainly a neo-Classical design with a strong French Second Empire influence. While touring the inside of the Town Hall, enjoy looking through the different portraits of civic leaders, memorials, and informational tablets and plaques recording the history of the city and New South Wales. Be sure to check out the Grand Organ, which was installed in the Town Hall in 1890. The organ is kept fine-tuned and still plays beautifully.

Once you have toured the Town Hall, stop by one of the cafes or bistros for a refreshing drink and flavorful snack or meal. Then hit some of the trendy shops and boutiques in the area to search for cute and fun souvenirs and gifts for loved ones back home.
