About Venezia Mestre

Venezie Mestre is one of two main train stations in the Venice area. It is located on the mainland, rather than in the city of Venice itself, but offers a range of easy connections to the city center. It is a popular transit hub among locals and tourists alike, with locals using the station for their daily commute and tourists using it to explore Venice and all of its attractions. Venezia Mestre isn’t the largest train station, however, it certainly doesn’t lack action. Approximately 500 trains make their way through the station every single day, connecting travelers with Venice and other Italian destinations.

Venezia is located in downtown Mestre, a mainland town that is connected to Venice by a bridge. Initially opened in 1842, the train station is now operated by Grandi Stazione who also owns Venezia Santa Lucia, the train station in Venice city. In 1994, the importance of the station was recognized through its inclusion in the Pan-European Corridors. This identified 10 transport networks that are essential to transport through the European Union and therefore deserve investment and development. Venezia Mestre has benefited from this inclusion, receiving financial investment to help it satisfy its 85,000 daily passengers.

Things to do near Venezia Mestre

If you have some time in Mestre after traveling to Venezia Mestre, there are a range of sites and activities to experience. Most people skip the town in favor of heading the famous Venice but they’re missing out on this underrated town. In fact, there are some similarities between Mestre and Venice, but the town does not have the hordes of tourists and tour groups that Venice sees, making it a much more relaxing environment to explore.

  • Wander the Piazza Erminio Ferretto (kind of like San Marco square, but quieter!)
  • Indulge in some classic Italian pizza (Ristorante Pizzeria Garibaldi is a good choice close to the station)
  • Learn about modern Italian history at Museo M9 Mestre
  • Take in the sights at Forte Marghera
  • Stand in awe of the Duomo
  • Admire the views at San Giuliano
