The time for fun and good beer begins with the arrival of Oktoberfest!
A bit of history for those curious: the first Oktoberfest was held way back in 1810! Now known as Oktoberfest, this significant event began as a celebration of the marriage between Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in October.
What started as a love story has evolved into the world’s largest beer festival. Today, this beer festival celebrates not just love, but friendship, drinks, food, music, and many other joys.
Oktoberfest 2024 will take place at its traditional location, Theresienwiese, in the heart of Munich, Germany. The festival runs for sixteen days, from September 21st to October 6th, and gets more popular every year! Last year, as many as 7.2 million people visited Munich Oktoberfest, and this year the same number of visitors are expected from all over the world in celebration of great beer!
Don't miss the opening day ceremony, which begins at noon at the Schottenhamel tent. On this day, you can join the parade of Oktoberfest landlords, who own the large beer tents. As the heads of traditional Bavarian breweries, they play a key role at Oktoberfest. This parade is a great presentation of Bavarian culture with many interesting things to experience, such as music, craftsmanship, and more.
It’s important to know what the weather might be like and what to expect at the festival beforehand.
This year, expect typical autumnal weather during Oktoberfest: cool days with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 19°C and chilly mornings and evenings around 8°C to 10°C. Make sure you bring an umbrella or a raincoat and wear warm clothes.
If you're thinking that mulled wine would warm you up, you're spot on! Even though beer is the main attraction, there are plenty of other options available, including wine, sparkling wine, lemonade, water, non-alcoholic beer, and much more.
Safety always comes first! Here are a few steps that the festival has taken to make you feel secure:
While you don't need a ticket for this free festival, you should make a reservation for seats in the beer tents to get the full experience. The cost of the beer tent reservations depends on the size of the tent. Be sure to grab your food and drink vouchers ahead of time!
There are many modes of transportation you can use to make your way to Munich Oktoberfest and back to your home or accommodation. If driving isn't an option, you can use public transport, such as the U-Bahn (subway), trams, buses, or S-Bahn (commuter rail).
Munich's public transport offers excellent connectivity to and from the festival grounds. Here, you can find more information on how to get to the festival by public transport.
Remember, bags are checked at the entrance. For easy entrance, keep an eye on the specific bag policy and anything you should avoid when visiting Munich Oktoberfest 2024:
The event has a dedicated area for storing things (outside the Oktoberfest grounds, near the entrance), but due to the high number of visitors, it is likely it might fill up quickly. Bounce is a great alternative, offering storage solutions for easier traveling and helps manage your time.

Opening Weekend: The first weekend is always bustling with excitement and festivities, including the official opening ceremonies. Weekdays: If you prefer a less crowded experience, visiting on a weekday, especially in the mornings, might be a good option. Family Days: Every Tuesday until 7p.m. during Oktoberfest is designated as "Family Day", with discounted prices on rides and performances, which might be the best time if you are visiting with family. Closing Weekend: The last weekend of Oktoberfest is also quite popular, with various closing ceremonies and events.
Many attendees, including a former Munich resident who is a longtime fan of the festival, emphasize that while people initially flock to Oktoberfest for the beer, they often find themselves engrossed in the vibrant atmosphere characterized by rousing songs, tabletop dances, and traditional German cuisine, fostering a unique sense of community that is hard to find elsewhere. The festival, which unfolds in the historic Theresienwiese, offers a "blast" of an experience that many cherish, with some even describing it as a "once in a lifetime experience," especially for beer enthusiasts. However, potential visitors should note that enjoying the festivities, particularly in popular tents like the Paulaner, can come with high costs. Despite this, the consensus seems to be that the rich cultural experience and the joyous atmosphere make the Oktoberfest a celebration worth attending
Prices vary each year and are slightly higher this time. This year, expect to pay 12 to 14 euros for a beer, depending on the tent or brewery. Some tents will expect a small tip in addition to the cost. If, along with the beer, you want to enjoy Bavarian cuisine, you will need to pay extra for some of their specialties, like pretzels, sausages, and other festival favorites. The price for the original Bavarian pretzel is around 5 to 7 euros. There are various types of sausages ranging from 7 to 14 euros.
Entry to Oktoberfest is free! However, you'll need to pay for food, drinks, and attractions. Reservations are required for beer tent access, which include vouchers for food and beer. Ride costs vary: Ferris wheels are 8 to 10 euros, merry-go-rounds 3 to 5 euros, roller coasters 8 to 12 euros, and fun or haunted houses 5 to 8 euros. Games cost 3 to 6 euros per play. Cash is recommended as not all vendors accept cards.
