The magical moment of seeing a tree-lighting ceremony awaits you in NYC! Make your Christmas holiday season splendid at Rockefeller Plaza!
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting tradition has existed for over 90 years! The first official lighting was in 1933 during the Great Depression, but the tradition actually began in 1931 when construction workers at Rockefeller Center gathered their hard-earned money to buy a Christmas tree. That tree was quite humble, but it was a beautiful gesture that brought joy to New Yorkers during difficult times!
Now, the decorated tree is enormous, standing between 75 and 90 feet tall and weighing around 10-12 tons. In 1999, the record was set with the tallest displayed tree - a 100-foot Norway spruce.
The tree arrives earlier than the festival, on November 16, and many New Yorkers gather for the occasion. Once it arrives, it's adorned with over 50,000 multicolored LED lights. On its top stands a massive star made of 3 million Swarowsky crystals! Imagine that!
The main event is held at Rockefeller Plaza, which is located between West 48th and West 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony traditionally takes place on the first Wednesday before Thanksgiving day. Prepare your bags and plan your trip to NYC for December 4.
Expect a festive atmosphere to prepare you for the holidays!
Joy and excitement are guaranteed—that's a promise! Many special guests will appear, but their names remain a secret.
You just have to experience the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and its dazzling lights in person! While the ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC, allowing millions worldwide to watch, there’s nothing quite like seeing it in person, surrounded by the magical energy of New York City.
The beginning of the event is scheduled for 7 PM, but the tree will be lit at 9:57 PM. Don't miss it!
Early December in New York City brings cold weather. Temperatures can range from the mid-30s to mid-40s Fahrenheit (1-7°C). Rain or snow may occur, so be prepared! Dress in layers, put on waterproof shoes, and bring an umbrella!
The Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony is free to attend.
