In 1921, artist Antonio D'Arliano introduced papier-mâché as a primary material for constructing floats. Another exciting thing happened in 1931, when artist Umberto Bonetti created the carnival's mascot, Burlamacco. The Venetian Commedia dell'Arte inspired this clown figure, symbolizing joy and festivity.

The Carnevale di Viareggio is now considered one of the world's most essential and extravagant carnivals, on par with the Venice Carnival and Rio Carnival.

The event takes place along the Passeggiata a Mare, the seafront promenade of Viareggio in Tuscany, Italy.
