Best Beaches Near Stockholm

Sandy Stockholm beach with a branch onshore, a calm sea, and people on the dock

The capital city of Sweden, Stockholm stretches across 14 islands and has more than 3 million residents. The city is the cultural center of Sweden with some of the most beautiful buildings among the Nordic countries. The Royal Dramatic Theater and Drottningholm Palace are must-see buildings and the lakes around the city add to its charming beauty.

Stockholm is worth visiting at any time of the year! The winters are beautiful when the crisp white snow covers the historic buildings. The summers are nice and mild, so June to August is the perfect time for a beach day. If you're not visiting during summer, the water gets pretty chilly.

Don’t let that hold you back, because the beaches in Stockholm are always beautiful. The scenic waterfront and lush greenery are too good to miss. There's always something to do around those beaches, so let us share our favorite places and why they’re worth your visit!

1. Smedsuddsbadet

If you're in downtown Stockholm and itching to go for a swim, Smedsuddsbadet is the beach for you! You can stroll along Riddarfjärden Bay or catch the number 1 bus. It’s just a 20-minute ride, but the scenic view makes it worth the walk there. You'll also pass through Rålambshovsparken, a park you're bound to love!

Let's talk about the beach first. Picture a lovely sandy beach nestled among trees with a stunning view of Langholmen Island and Lake Mälaren. Usually, there aren't many people there, so you can expect a calm and relaxing vibe. You'll need to bring your own umbrella and beach mats since there aren't any renting options. This a perfect spot for chilling in the hot summer days, and the best part? It's totally free!

Make the most of your day with your dog or other people in the nearby park! The walking path runs right next to the beach, which is perfect for a serene hike through nature. You can rent a canoe or kayak from Eden, a three-in-one place: restaurant, sauna, and rental service. The Rålambshovsparken park is a great spot for a picnic, a game of beach volleyball, or shooting hoops on the small basketball court.

Make the most of your day at Smedsuddsbadet

Have you just checked out of your hotel, but want a quick trip to the beach? Wondering if there’s a place to leave your stuff? You can drop off your bags or laptop at one of many luggage storage locations! A day at the beach and a jog through the park are way better if you're not carrying stuff you don't need.

2. Långholmsbadet

This small sandy beach is perfect for a nice day out with friends or family. You can take a quick dip or relax with a good book at this beach next to central Stockholm. The easiest way to get there is by cab, but there's also free parking nearby if you're driving. Since you'll reach it in just 15 minutes,  it's perfect for a quick trip to the beach!

While the water quality isn't the best, the scenic view, idyllic nature, and fun activities more than make up for it! The beach has lovely grassy areas that are perfect for picnics. This one’s not a popular beach, so you'll always find a spot to kick back on a sunny day. Plus, it's free, and there are plenty of changing rooms and restrooms around for a long, exciting beach day!

Here's an insider tip: Take a walk along the path on the east or west sides of the island, and you'll stumble upon some beautiful gardens and scenic spots along the way! You get hungry pretty fast when you explore or play beach volleyball, so grab a bite at one of the nearby restaurants. Stora Henriksvik has a wonderful outside area that looks out onto the water. Långholmens Wärdshus is a bit pricier but very fancy. Both places have many food options, so whatever you're craving is probably on the menu!

Flaten Lake is perfect for a nice refreshing swim in Stockholm. It's a bit off the beaten path, but it’s clean, and always has plenty of space!
