About the Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Known as Kyoto’s “Pure Water Temple,” Kiyomizu-dera (or Kiyomizudera) is one of the most revered Buddhist temples in the world. It’s situated in the foothills of the mountains east of central Kyoto and has a magnificently beautiful waterfall in the backdrop. Its most notable feature has to be the wooden platform that provides stunning views of the surrounding topography, especially the hills covered in thick groves of cherry trees that are impossibly beautiful during cherry blossom season.

Without question, this place is well-deserving of its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. It’s important to remember that this temple is first and foremost a place of worship and contemplation, so observing proper customs and etiquette is advisable and respectful. If you’re also looking to explore Kiomizu Dera, the various other temple buildings, and Kyoto City Center, luggage storage makes sense. There are plenty of major landmarks and attractions in Kyoto, which translates to Capital City. Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Tower are just a few, along with an exceptional restaurant scene - especially the tea houses.

The city is situated just a short train ride away from Kiyomizu Gojo Station, which sits at the base of the hill and connects the temple with the rest of Kyoto and beyond. You’ll be able to rely on convenient Kyoto luggage storage through Bounce for both exploring the city and visiting the temple.

Getting to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera provides the best of both worlds in terms of its easy access to the rest of Kyoto and the remote feel of its hillside surroundings. You can get to the temple in less than 30 minutes from most parts of Kyoto through the efficient public transportation network of the city. It will involve a walk uphill for most visitors, so planning ahead with proper footwear and arranging for luggage storage is advisable.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple by train

Kiyomizu Gojo Station is situated a 20-minute walk from the temple buildings and connects Kiyomizu-dera with JR Kyoto Station, and by extension, the rest of the city and Osaka as well.

  • From Osaka Station, you take the Tokaido-Sanyo Line to Kyoto Station and then transfer to the #206 bus. The whole trip takes about an hour.
  • Kiyomizu-Gojō Station is on the Keihan Main Line and can be reached from Kyoto Station in about 10 minutes, with an additional 20-minute walk.
  • From Kyoto Station, the best way to reach the temple is the #206 bus.

Kyoto City bus services for the Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kyoto’s city buses are remarkably efficient for getting around, and there are a few routes serving the Gojo zaka bus stop or Kiyomizu-Michi bus stop that are just a 10-minute (uphill) walk to the temple.

  • From Kyoto City Center, you’ll take the #206 bus to the nearby Kiyomizu-michi bus stop and walk uphill to reach the temple.
  • From Toji Station, you can take the #207 or #202 bus and reach the temple in about 30 minutes.

Getting here from the airport

From Kansai International Airport (serving both Kyoto and Osaka), you can reach Kiyomizu-dera in just under 90 minutes via the Airport Limousine Bus through Kyoto Station. You can also take the JR Haruka Line from the airport to Kyoto Station and transfer to the #206 bus if you have the JR Rail Pass and want to save money.
