Located on the waterfront in Wellington, Te Papa Museum is the national museum of New Zealand, and its name means “our place.” They get more than 1.5 million visitors every year. The philosophy of the museum is that the living faces behind the treasures are just as important as the treasures themselves. The museum is known for many unique reasons.
For example, they have one of the first recognized dinosaur fossils in the world. The iguanodontid tooth was found in 1820 and is thought to be about 135 million years old. Another interesting fact is that Te Papa has over 200,000 fish specimens in jars. In fact, they have a special alcohol vapor detector to ensure the alcohol vapor levels do not get too high as they can be explosive.
In another area of the museum, you can see a mummified moa head that is extremely rare. It was found in the late 19th century in a cave in Central Otago and is more than 600 years old. The staff at the museum have named more than 2,500 novel plant and animal species since 1865, including the Hector’s Dolphin. It was named after the founder of the museum in 1865. With over 20 exhibits and many of them permanent, you will surely find something you love at Te Papa.
Fun Fact: Te Papa has the biggest lice collection in Australasia. This may be a strange thing to collect, but lice can tell scientists a lot about the animals they were found on.
If you like old things, Te Papa is your place. In fact, everyone will love this museum because of the variety of artifacts, information, and exhibits they have on display. Do not miss some of these that are our favorites.
We at Bounce travel often, and we ran into the problem of having to take our bags with us wherever we went. So, we decided to start our own service to help others like us who have bags hindering their fun. You will enjoy your time at Te Papa and the surrounding city of Wellington much more if you don’t have to take your luggage with you. Our Bounce partners will keep your things safe while you explore.
If you did not get enough cultural information at Te Papa, take a trip to one of the museums or other attractions in Wellington. Go shopping at the many malls and department stores for souvenirs, but don’t leave without trying some local cuisine. Just drop off your bags with one of our Bounce affiliates on your way.
