Early participants wore masks and costumes, transforming the streets into a colorful carnival.

The Tenerife Carnival, influenced by other European carnivals, is now one of the biggest celebrations of its kind, often compared to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

What to Expect When Attending Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2025

Each year, this event features a different theme. This year's theme is Secrets of Africa.

Costume contests, carnival parties, vibrant parades, and more - the Carnival in Santa Cruz has it all! The carnival will be celebrated on the streets of Plaza de España, with the whole venue wonderfully decorated.

Some of the main events are the Opening Parade, the Carnival Queen Gala, the Nighttime Street Parties, the Daytime Carnival, and the Big Carnival Parade.

The Carnival kicks off with the Opening Parade called Cabalgata Anunciadora on January 31. Expect elaborate floats, dancers wearing costumes, and musical groups.

On February 26, there will be contests for the Carnival Queen, her Court, and the Junior Carnival Queen. The Queen chosen at this glamorous event reigns over the entire carnival!

The Main Parade is held on March 4. It's followed by the Burial of the Sardine, a humorous festival event when a giant sardine effigy is paraded through the streets and "burned," followed by exaggerated mourning.

Piñata Sunday is scheduled to close the festivities with street parties, food stalls, and many family-friendly activities like games, performers, and piñata-breaking fun.

Many outdoor events, like street parades and parties, are free to the public. However, some key competitions, such as the Gala for the Election of the Carnival Queen, require tickets.
