About Shanghai Disneyland
Shanghai Disneyland Park is a theme park located in Pudong, a district in the Chinese city of Shanghai. The park is part of the Shanghai Disney Resort complex, which is also home to an entertainment district, hotels, a lake, and other recreational facilities. The theme park, which officially opened to the public on June 16, 2016, is managed by the Shanghai Shendi Group and Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company.
Shanghai Disneyland is only the sixth Disney theme park in the world and is the first one to be built in mainland China. Initially, the park had seven individually-themed areas: Adventure Isle, Fantasyland, Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Toy Story Land, and Treasure Cove. However, in 2019, the management announced the addition of an eight themed area within the park called the City of Zootopia, which is based on the Walt Disney animated feature film Zootopia. The construction of the park’s expansion began in December 2019.
To be as authentic as possible, Shanghai Disneyland incorporates plenty of Chinese elements and hints of the country’s culture into the park, such as the use of the Mandarin language and Chinese zodiac murals in some sections of the park. Furthermore, Shanghai Disneyland has gathered many records, including having the first pirate-themed garden and the tallest theme castle in all of the Disneylands.
Fun fact: Shanghai Disneyland covers an area of 287 acres and was reported to have cost 24.5 billion RMB (approximately 3.5 billion USD) to complete.
